Working out what size wall art above sofa cushions will look balanced is the single biggest decision in a living room — bigger than colour, bigger than style. The wall above the couch is usually the largest uninterrupted surface in an Australian home, and it is where undersized art goes to look lonely. In this guide we share the sizing rules we use at Printcasso, with real centimetre numbers for the sofa widths most common in Australia, so you can order the right piece the first time.
The 60–75% of sofa width rule
Your artwork — or the full span of a multi-piece arrangement — should measure between 60% and 75% of your sofa's width. Under 60% and the art looks like an afterthought; over about 80% and it starts competing with the furniture rather than sitting comfortably above it. Measure your sofa arm to arm, multiply by 0.6 and 0.75, and you have your target range in centimetres. It takes two minutes and removes all the guesswork.
Common Australian sofa widths and matching art sizes (cm)
So, what size wall art above the sofa in practice? Here are typical Australian sofa widths with their matching artwork spans:
| Sofa | Typical width | Artwork span (60–75%) | What works |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2-seater | 160–180cm | 96–135cm | One wide canvas or a pair |
| 2.5-seater | 190–210cm | 115–157cm | One large canvas, or a set of 2 |
| 3-seater | 220–240cm | 132–180cm | A large canvas, or a set of 3 |
| Modular / L-shape | 280cm+ | size to the main run | A trio, or one very large canvas |
Our canvas sizes go up to 122x162cm — genuinely large-wall territory — and because every piece is printed and hand-framed in Australia and arrives ready to hang, even the biggest sizes go from box to wall in minutes. Each artwork's product page lists its exact size options.
The 152cm centre-height rule
Galleries hang art so its centre sits at average eye level — about 152cm from the floor. Above a sofa, there is a second constraint: leave roughly 20–30cm between the sofa back and the bottom of the artwork. If the two rules disagree, let the sofa win; art anchored to the furniture below it always looks intentional. Whatever you do, resist pushing the art halfway to the ceiling to "fill the wall" — the empty band above the sofa is exactly what makes the arrangement feel considered.
When to use a set of 2 or 3 instead of one piece
Long, low sofas — especially modulars — often suit a set better than a single artwork, because sets stretch horizontally without needing an enormous single canvas. A set of 3 wall art spaced 5–8cm apart reads as one wide composition and is the classic answer above a 3-seater. A matching pair, such as our Pacific I and Pacific II art prints, gives symmetry that flatters a formal room. Our pairs and trios collection is designed by one artist so every set genuinely belongs together — no hunting for pieces that "sort of" match.
Horizontal vs vertical artwork above a sofa
Horizontal (landscape) formats mirror the line of the sofa itself, which is why they nearly always feel right in this spot — our horizontal canvas collection is built for exactly this wall. Vertical pieces above a sofa only work in multiples: two or three hung in a row create a horizontal overall span from portrait shapes. A single vertical artwork above a wide sofa creates the "postage stamp effect" — a small, high, lost-looking artwork — which is the one mistake this guide exists to prevent.

Frequently asked questions
How big should a picture be above a sofa?
Between 60% and 75% of the sofa's width. For a typical 230cm Australian 3-seater, that means an artwork or set spanning roughly 138–172cm.
How high do you hang art above a couch?
Leave 20–30cm between the sofa back and the bottom of the frame. On tall walls, keep the art anchored to the sofa rather than centring it in the leftover wall space.
Can wall art be wider than the sofa?
We recommend against it — art wider than the sofa unbalances the room and loses the framing effect of furniture beneath. Stay inside the 75% line for the most composed result.
What is the postage stamp effect in decorating?
It is the look of a too-small artwork on a large wall — like a stamp on an envelope. It is cured by sizing art to the furniture below it, or by grouping pieces into a pair or trio to build width.
