A4, A3, A2: Australian Art Print Sizes Explained (with cm Chart)

A4, A3, A2: Australian Art Print Sizes Explained (with cm Chart)

Art print sizes in Australia follow the international A-series — the same logic as the A4 paper in your printer — but knowing that "A2" is bigger than "A3" is not the same as knowing what either looks like above your sideboard. Buying art online goes wrong most often at exactly this step: the artwork is perfect, the size is a guess. This guide puts real centimetres against every size name we use, so you can order with a tape measure instead of a hunch.

Standard art print sizes Australia uses: the A-series in cm and inches

The A-series has one elegant rule: each size is exactly half the one above it, and every size shares the same proportions. Fold an A2 in half and you have A3; fold again, A4. That constant ratio is why a series of A-size prints always looks related on a wall.

Size Centimetres Inches (approx.) Feels like
A4 21 x 29.7cm 8.3 x 11.7" A sheet of office paper
A3 29.7 x 42cm 11.7 x 16.5" Two A4s side by side
A2 42 x 59.4cm 16.5 x 23.4" A serious framed artwork
A1 59.4 x 84.1cm 23.4 x 33.1" Statement territory
A0 84.1 x 118.9cm 33.1 x 46.8" A small door

Our print sizes: A4, A3, 40x50cm, A2 and up

Printcasso art prints start at A4 (21x29.7cm) and go up from there — typically through A3, the popular 40x50cm frame-standard size, A2 and beyond, with the exact options for each artwork listed on its product page. Every print is made on quality art paper and comes either unframed (from $55 AUD) or framed in oak, black or white (from $139 AUD), printed and framed here in Australia. If you are printing a set, keep all pieces the same size — mixed sizes in one arrangement is an advanced move that rarely beats the clean version.

Matching print size to wall and furniture width

Two rules cover nearly every situation. Over furniture, the artwork (or set) should span roughly two-thirds of the furniture's width: a 120cm console wants about 80cm of art — an A1, or a pair of A3s with a small gap. On open wall, the artwork should occupy roughly half to three-quarters of the visual field between fixtures. When torn between two sizes, take the larger; undersized art is the most common regret we hear, oversized almost never. Orientation matters as much as area — browse vertical wall art for narrow walls and hallways, and horizontal wall art for above sofas, beds and consoles.

How frames change the finished size

A frame adds width on every side, so a framed A3 hangs noticeably larger than 29.7x42cm — useful when a bare size feels slightly small for the spot. Check the finished framed dimensions listed on the product page and use those, not the paper size, for your wall maths. It also helps to mock the size up: cut a sheet of newspaper or baking paper to the finished dimensions, tape it to the wall, and stand back. Thirty seconds of paper beats any amount of squinting at a screen.

Canvas sizes: 30x45cm to 122x162cm

Canvas runs on its own scale, and it runs larger: our range spans 30x45cm up to 122x162cm. Because a stretched or floating-frame canvas needs no glass, big sizes stay light and manageable — which is why canvas is usually the answer once a wall calls for something beyond A1. As a bridge between the systems: a 76x102cm canvas sits between A1 and A0, and the largest 122x162cm canvas is comfortably bigger than an A0. Use our size guide before you buy

Every product page lists that artwork's available sizes, and our size guide covers the details in one place. Still unsure between two sizes for a specific wall? Measure the furniture beneath, apply the two-thirds rule, and round up — or start from an artwork you love, like the Pink Peony I art print, and let its size options guide the shortlist.

Frequently asked questions

What size is A2 in cm?

A2 is 42 x 59.4cm (about 16.5 x 23.4 inches) — double an A3, half an A1.

What are standard print sizes in Australia?

The A-series — A4, A3, A2, A1, A0 — plus frame-standard sizes like 40x50cm. Australian framers and print sellers, ourselves included, work in these sizes.

Is A3 big enough for wall art?

On its own, A3 suits small walls, hallways, desks and shelves. On larger walls it works best in pairs or trios, or framed — the frame adds meaningful presence.

What size canvas for a large wall?

For a feature wall or above a 3-seater sofa, look from about 90cm wide upward. Our canvas range tops out at 122x162cm, which will anchor almost any Australian living room.
